From the backseat. No context.

Four-year-old daughter: “Mama, I killed a man.”

*Bohemian Rhapsody* lyrics are probably more complex than explaining the role of search warrants in our judicial system. She’s not asking about murder or search warrants. But her favorite song right now is “Lemon Pound Cake” by Afroman.

She objects if I stop the song early for censorship purposes.

I wonder where she is on her journey toward conceptualizing things like death, murder, or justice.

I wonder if I should be like Jonas in Lois Lowry’s *The Giver*, who, having received memories of war, begs the other children not to play at it.

I do stop my children sometimes and ask them to consider more deeply the content of their games. But I think I am more inclined to be like Afroman.

Better to make something. Better still to make us all laugh.

It’s good for the heart to laugh, and laughter is an efficient way to become intimate with the moral edges of our world.
